BLACK RUGS
Ok so you are looking for a black oriental rug. Being an oriental rug means that you are looking for a hand knotted rug, made in the traditional manner, and not using a cotton canvas like they do with the hand tufted rugs.
This means that you are restricted in the choice of black rugs. You've probably noticed this already, but are you wondering why?
Actually there are a few reasons why. First of all, black is a very difficult colour to obtain in vegetable dyes, which is what most if not all rugs were made with before reliable chrome dyes were created. Of course oak tree parts and iron were used as a blend, but in all honesty, these are damaging to the rug's pile. One of the problems with vegetable dyes is that being natural items, they are also very edible to certain creatures, and this can sometimes mean accelerated visual wear, through what is in fact destruction.
But even the dyes used to achieve black are very difficult to correctly set up for black, which is why a very, very dark blue is the most common substitute for black in oriental rugs.
Hand tufted rugs, however, are a different kettle of fish. You can easily find true black rugs in a modern design, made of wool or acrylic (or polyproplene if you are so inclined).
If you are having a hard time finding a decent black rug, try the following types of rugs and see if you can find something that tickles your fancy:
Nepal rugs
Tufted wool rugs
Tufted acrylic rugs
Shaggy pile rugs
Modern heatset polyproplene rugs(machine made)
Tabriz hand knotted rugs
Nahavand hand knotted rugs
Hamadan hand knotted rugs
Unfortunately most machine made rugs have very short pile heights.
We hope this helps you find your ideal black rug!
